Hot Topics: Saltbush in Farming Systems

Saltbush used for grazing and revegetation has been a hot topic for many producers. For some, establishing saltbush has provided a substantial benefit to their properties, however this change also represents a considerable cost and long term commitment.

Sheep Grazing Saltbush

    Saltbush.... so many questions...

  • Is saltbush a cost efficient fodder source for my livestock?
  • How will saltbush effect the performance of my livestock?
  • How will I know when to destock a saltbush stand?
  • Will I need to supplementary feed?
  • What about anti-nutritive factors?
  • Are many producers establishing saltbush?
  • Is saltbush the best solution for revegetation and for addressing salinity issues?
  • Can I make saltbush work for me?

We are currently establishing a project in South Australia, funded by the South Australian Sheep Industry Fund and with collaboration from SARDI, to look at questions about saltbush, the cost or cost benefit of grazing saltbush and the best way to utilise saltbush.

Trial sites are currently being established and are likely to be in the central pastoral, mid north and upper south east districts. Producers will be invited to trial sites to discuss the results of on-farm trials, share experiences, raise questions and to get involved in hands-on activities at workshops. The focus will be the discovery of practical information for on-farm use.
