National Code of Practice for Intensive Sheep and Lamb Feeding SystemsFrequently Asked Questions Below is a list of common questions about the Code. If the information you are looking for is not yet listed, please contact our office and we will be happy to answer any queries you may have. Scope of the Code Top of page Will the Code of Practice include feedlot-finishing and paddock-finishing? The Code initially included all intensive lamb finishing systems, however, pasture based finishing systems will now be excluded due to their different environmental impacts. A supplement for pasture based finishing systems may be considered at a later date. Accreditation Top of page Will there be an accreditation process for producers complying with the Code? A self-assessment and audit tool will be developed as part of the second stage of this project. Stakeholders wishing to road-test the tool are encouraged to register their interest. Consultative Forums Top of page The time/location of the forums mean I cannot attend. Can you run a forum in my area? If sufficient interest is received in locations where forums are not scheduled, running additional forums will be investigated. Please email us if you have a location to suggest. Feedback Top of page Can anyone give feedback on the Code? We welcome feedback from anyone who has an interest in lamb finishing. Will the feedback I provide be publicly available? All feedback received will be considered and personal information will not be made publicly available. Legislation Top of page Will the Code be legislated? The code will comprise of minimum standards and guidelines. There is the potential for the standards to be put into legislation at some time in the future but this will be determined by individual state governments. Guidelines are generally just that. The standards will form the basis of the audit process that will be developed following the first round of consultation. It is envisaged that the Code will be a "work in progress" for some time, as there are many aspects of intensive lamb finishing that require further research. Will this Code take precedence over other codes of practice? It is possible that the standards may be used for future legislation. As this is the first time that a National Code of Practice has been developed for the intensive lamb finishing sector, and as many of the current guidelines available are based on cattle feedlotting, it is envisaged that this national Code will underpin the development of guidelines by local councils, state departments of agriculture and environmental protection authorities.
